Tracey Hatton - Drawing & Painting

I spent much of my life living in New Zealand, returning to the UK in 1993 and embarked on my lifelong dream of attending art school. I graduated with a First Class [Hons] degree in Fine Art in 2003 and with a PG Dip in Fine Art Research in 2006. At Bristol School of Art, Media and Design I developed a conceptual art practice, and upon leaving UWE I returned to my former passion of drawing with graphite.
My interest is kindled by stories of the land and the way that regularly walking a particular place imbues a sense of belonging. At first I followed my Welsh ancestors’ paths investigating the landscape they walked and responded with a series of drawings. Having moved to a village in West Somerset in 2010 I now draw upon my locale of Exmoor and lowland landscapes plus the stories the villagers tell of their relationship with this land. As I walk and draw I feel I am creating my own story and sense of belonging to this place.
My way of working is gestural and this imbibes the work with emotion and movement. Larger drawings are created in my studio from sketches and photographs made on my daily walks; while smaller works are both created on location and in the studio. I sometimes paint in oil on canvas or board and these are informed by memory and impression. I enjoy working from still life and also creating abstract drawings that appear to have geographical references.
