Kerry Tremlett - Printmaking

I am an artist and printmaker based in Devon. I studied BA textile design in the 1980̢۪s and specialized in printed surface decoration. This textile background gave me a great love of colour, pattern and design. Since graduating I have worked as a freelance wallpaper designer and also ran my own business for several years producing hand made mirrors.

I discovered traditional printmaking at the Double Elephant print workshop in Exeter in 2004. I quickly became hooked and eventually bought my own Victorian Albion press dated 1861.

I largely work with two printmaking techniques, monotype and relief. They achieve very different results but are equally enjoyable. The relief printing in the form of lino cuts is more precise and the monotypes have a more painterly feel. I incorporate many layers of colour with both techniques, thus building the image intuitively. Using these traditional methods and tools I achieve a contemporary feel to my work.

Printmaking is a wonderfully exciting way to get colour on to paper and I really enjoy the surprise element that you get with each changing layer.
