Karen Edwards - Ceramic Work

I have always loved to make 3D objects, sewing and knitting from childhood, but followed my other passion – languages – for my first career in business. Parenthood then enabled me to attend pottery classes, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I began making and selling domestic tableware, but while studying at Bridgwater College a compulsory project made me start handbuilding and I’ve concentrated on that for over ten years now, enjoying the rhythm and focus of coiling, slabbing, pinching and carving.

Clay gives me the means to combine, express and enjoy my interest in plants, landscape and texture. I focus on making sculptures and planters for garden use, firing them to stoneware temperature so that they are frostproof. Colours are soft, natural and muted, intending to complement plants rather than compete with them.

As all pieces are individually built and decorated, no two can ever be identical, and that is very important to me in this age of mass-produced uniformity. A sculpture or planter can be a perfect way to commemorate a special birthday or life milestone, and I am happy to discuss personalisation or commission ideas.

Visitors are always welcome to my studio, although it is advisable to check I will be there before making a special journey.
